On the back of ACC Drake’s appearance at the committee today he promised to provide figures for the number of times that South Wales Police used Section 136 powers on persons under the age of 18.

I can confirm that between April 1st 2018 – March 31st 2019 there were a total of 39 persons under the age of 18 who were detained by South Wales Police under section 136 of the Mental Health Act.

Please can you disseminate this to the panel or as you see fit.

Apologies for the delay – I have been awaiting data from the other Welsh Forces.

The figures for the number of persons detained under section 136 under the age of 18 is as follows:

•    North Wales Police – 0

•    Dyfed Powys Police – 7

•    Gwent Police – 19
